I can't take it anymore!! --Leslie

I can't take it anymore!

I'm chopping my hair off this weekend. I'm quite sure it's the heat and humidity causing it but by 9am every morning it's limp, stringy and stuck to my head and lost entire shape and style. And I look in the mirror and feel blah. And darn it, I dress too cute to be feeling blah. Hair appointment is set for 11:45 Saturday morning.

What I am doing with it--well, that I'm not so sure about. I have a couple ideas--but they are just ideas. I'm open to more. That's where you fine, fashionable people come in. You've seen my style and probably get an idea of my personality from this blog to know what may work. And after all, I think hair is a part of fashion.

Here are the facts:

  • I have incredibly fine, ultra straight hair. (My color has faded and I'm having touched up next Tuesday which will help make it a bit thicker--but not that much)
  • I like big hair. And in addition to my hair being fine, there is not a lot of it. So it's a challenge to get it big. I like big hair because I have a full face and I think it balances it out
  • I had a straight bob just past my ears--it was not good. 20 minutes after getting ready it was stringy and stuck to my face with no body. As such, it magnified my round face and cheeks. Not good.
  • I use premium hair products. People always say "well if you cant get body or get your hair to hold style you need to use better products." Trust me, that is not the issue. It's really quite ridiculous. But once you start with that stuff, you can't seem to ever go back you know? Anyhow...that's a whole other post.
  • Maybe the most important fact--I don't mind spending time to style my hair. I've never had a "wash and go" style because of all the reasons listed above so some styling and maintenance isn't a deterrent to me. Currently I spend about 7 minutes drying and about 10 minutes curling and flat-ironing every morning.
  • My hair now is basically as long as I've ever had in my life (within maybe a half inch)
So there you go. Feel free to toss out ideas, links to pictures...whatever you think may work. This blog depends on you. Because if I have bad hair, then I won't want to be posting pictures. No matter how fabulous the clothes.

Help!!!!!!!!!

While some of these would have to be altered (e.g. bangs being too long for your eyes), I think they all have enough layers to make your fine and thin hair seem bigger. I also liked Reese Witherspoon's in Sweet Home Alabama. However, it's somewhat similar to what you have now so take her cut and make it super short. I think that would be very chic!

Oh yeah...I think you should go REALLY short b/c I loved your hair whne it was very short...hence why some of the pictures on here are of very short hair. :) Love ya!

Could you get a perm or something that would give your hair more body to begin with?

Leslie said...

Kelly, I did ask my hairdresser about a body perm but the issue is that I have colortreated hair and they don't perm colortreated hair because of how damaging it is with perm solution on top. So yes- had that thought as well but they said it wouldnt work--and trust me when I say my natural color is nothing to write home about--just a much mousier, drab , ashy color of brown.

I'm not a lot of help...you know me. If it requires more effort than to detangle it after washing then I'm not going to do it.

I do question the fact they won't double process your hair - I know it's the safe way to go and prevents damage, but I'm surprised they don't do it on a case-by-case basis.

You have to be careful you don't get a too "done" hair style because that can get very Soccer Mom very quickly. You're far too young for that business!

OK Leslie, I have no ideas for your hair but I love you! When something frustrates me I say "I am too good looking for this" I got a bad dye job a few months ago I said I was thankful my face was pretty enough to carry it off. Also, I LOVE big hair. My daughter has to remind me sometimes that it is NOT the
80's. Anyway, good luck with the hair.
P.S. I use Aveda aerosol hairspray to help my fine hair achieve it's maximum heigth potential.

hehe, thanks kt!

al, i do know what you are saying re: too styled hair but you know me and that i like a polished type haircut for the most part. dont want helmet hair--but i do want something that has a sleek, polished look.

I'm back! haha I told you I was passionate about your hair....I've never heard any stylist ever say they don't do perms on color treated hair. I find that hard to believe. I've seen people do it all the time. I do think a perm is a good idea. I personally think your hair is too dark anyway so why don't you go back more natural and get a perm. I think Z's always has rules of their own when the normal hair dressers would do it and not have a problem.

Here are my thoughts my friend, because you have been battling this for quite some time - time to do it!

1.) Cut the length, you can rock a cute short cut
2.) Do not get something that you have to take too much time in styling. You'll drive yourself crazy.
3.) I am against any sort of body perm, I have yet to see someone with a good outcome of that. Plus I think your hair would hold that for a month.
4.) As far as the color, I am a fan of your hair darker - but not too dark that is washes your face out.

Good luck! Can't wait to see it!

I LOVE the second one that Ash posted...super cute! I don't know how I feel about the perm...thats what my grandma does! So I think you can stick with good products and still look amazing as usual!!

I am going through the same crisis. I have fine hair but lots of it.
I got lots of great advice on my blog which I will take to my hairdresser. My appointment is booked for August 9th.
My advice would be have it cut a little shorter, long enough to grow back into the style you are comfortable with in a few months just in case you aren't happy.
If you like it then be brave and get it cut shorter the next time.
Good Luck

Hi!
I recently set a personal style blog, similar to this one...and then I realized we have the same template! Do you mind if we continue to use the same one?
Thanks -

PS - your blog is one of my favorites! :)

OK, as a testament to the fact that I have a questionable mind-set- There is a lady with a show on Noggin and I think her hair would look cute on you. I don't know her name but someone else who spends too much time watching kids tv might. She has a guitar and sings cute kids songs. Today she had on a pink tulle skirt. Her hair is a rich auburn color. Anyone know who I mean? I got on Noggins website (loser) and I cna't find her.

The Noggin channel huh? Haha, love it. Hey Im always open to ideas regardless of where they come from.

Fashion in the Sky--I think ours still look different enough I think we're ok :-) Im so glad we are one of your favorites!

Can I tell you how much it makes me laugh that this is one of our most commented on posts ever? Of course half of the comments are from my sister but still :-)

OK, you like how your blog has turned into a hair forum?
Tessa, if you see this the Noggin lady got a haircut. This is her old hair. Can you please find the new hair for Leslie? After you make your bed?

I have similar issues with my hair, and keep it short in order to be able to get more volume out of it. My hairdresser cuts some shorter layers underneath the longer ones, so that they give my hair some lift -- it's also what allows the ends of my hair to do the little flip that I often sport. I'd say cut it shorter in the back and angle it towards your face; maybe go for about chin length in the front. And I'm with Jamie -- no on the perm.

Oh, I use Spray and Play hairspray by Big Sexy Hair. It's the best one I've found for locking the volume in, and it's not gross and sticky either. I lift my hair up and spray it up underneath at the roots, then let it dry for a few seconds before letting go. Then I just crunch it into place. I only spend about 5-10 minutes on my hair each day; the haircut does most of the work for me.

Good luck with the new cut! Can't wait to see what you finally decide on!
