Happy Halloween from Jamie & Miko
Posted by Jamie at 3:52 PM 6 comments
Happy HOWLoween! - Ally
I hate Halloween. I don't like dressing up and don't get excited about it. However, Al LOVES Halloween and that means I have to play along. We're going out tonight and expect pictures over the weekend. That's all I'm saying...hahahaa
Sweater: Ralph Lauren (I got a DEAL on this. Do a search for some coupon codes and you can get it cheaper that what's online now.)
Scarf: vintage Vera, via ebay
Pants: Old Navy
Quilted patent peep toes: Target
I've gotten a surprising amount of comments today on this sweater - I had no idea it'd be so popular :) It's soooo soft and if I could afford it, I'd have it in every color! I wish the detail on the top pic was better but you can see it online. The cables are in a chevron pattern so it's super flattering.
This color is much more accurate of the sweater. It worries me with HOW ORANGE it is, but it's still cute and I loooove it.
It's silk and was originally $159 and I got it for $35!!
While I hate Halloween (greedy kids!), I do love dressing up the dog for it! Maddy's a good sport most of the time and this is a picture from 2003 or 2004. She looks so young in it too! She'll be dressing up tonight along with her Aunt Ginger and if everyone cooperates, we'll have pics of that tomorrow too!

Foray into colored tights -- Leslie
Black Wrap Tee: CAbi
Black Pencil Skirt: The Limited
Scarf: Mark
Plum Tights: Merona
Pumps: Type A
Decided to channel my inner Gossip Girl and try out wearing colored tights today--and it was quite fun! In fact I liked it so much I ordered some red tights as well (contrary to what some people think--you know who you are-- I think they could be cute, especially around the holidays! :-) ). They received good comments for the most part! One co-worker said this morning she didn't like them--but they had grown on her by the end of the day and this evening I had 3 different people stop and ask me where I got them while I was standing in a lobby chatting in the evening. Funness! However, I will say I had read that if you're going to wear colored tights you have to walk with confidence which I made a habit to do all day (I try to every day but today even more so than normal)-- because they were noticed and statement making! If I was nervous about wearing them (and no doubt, I was--there is a fine line between trendy and chic and teenage 80s flashback as we all know), I couldn't show it. And I didn't. I think so much of fashion is like that--if you are confident and believe in what you have on, others start to believe as well no matter what their original instinct.
3 random pieces of note on this picture:
1. There is evidently a water spot on my camera lens. There is NOT a white round spot on the center of my skirt
2. This is my favorite ultra flattering wrap tee. However, I hate that my scarf fell to the side the way it did in the pic on the left because you can't see any of the ruching and waist definition it gives like you could the other time I wore it. I'll fix it for the next wearing so you can see-- it's a great shirt and I'm going to be getting it in teal as well I like the fit so much (and the fact that it's the only wrap top I don't have to pin to keep from flashing everyone).
3. I got this mop of hair cut at lunch--it had gotten so long for me! It's only been 7 weeks but my hair grows fast, plus with short hair, 7 weeks is an eternity between cuts!
Last but not least, my inspiration for red tights....Miss Blair Waldorf. Blair inspired me to wear feathers earlier this season. I just try not to think about the fact that they play high schoolers on tv and I'm about a decade past that. Seriously, what high schooler dresses like that?!?!?!

Thursday -- Ally
Looks like waiting until after 12pm to take the picture works best. That's highly inconvenient for me, of course.
Cardi: NY&Co
Ruffled shirt: Gap
Black pants: Old Navy
Shoes: Cole Haan
I'm not sure what's up w/my hair. I rode around w/one of the maintenance guys earlier so I now smell like an ashtray. I Febreez'd my hair and I think it killed what "oomph" it had earlier in the day. Go figure.
I got this shirt while on vacation for $9. It's sleeveless but I prefer sleeveless in this weather since I'm all layered up. I'm hot-natured and this keeps me from sweating at my desk. Classy!
Preppy Plaid
White tie-neck shirt: The Limited
Deep V Short Sleeve Cable Knit: NY and Co
Plaid Jacket: CAbi
Black Pants: Harold's
Red Pumps: Pleaser
Baby, it's cold outside! However, I'm not quite ready to pull out the winter coat just yet so I've been opting for layers instead. This jacket is double breasted and looks cute open or buttoned up and belted--I decided today to just leave it open and wear a tie neck shirt and deep v sweater for a different touch. I have a feeling this jacket will get lots of wear to UofL games this fall and winter!
Picture is a little fuzzy today. No clue why but normally I take a few shots in the morning in case something is wrong with one of the others--however, this morning, I took only a single photo so of course it's fuzzy with my luck! However, I think you can still see the general look.

Wednesday -- Ally
I'm having the hardest time finding a good spot for pics now that the sun is changing its position. My previous "new" spot is too dark in the mornings and this spot is too light. *sigh*
Dress: JCP/Worthington (It's on super clearance now - I had to get a size down too, so keep that in mind if you're ordering)
Cardi: NY&Co.
Tights: no idea. They now live in the trash can. More on that in a bit.
Shoes: JCP (Mama got them for $2.94 or something nuts earlier in the summer!)
Bag: Furla *swoon drool*
This is the "real life" picture for the Peanut Gallery (ahem Tracey, Kimberly, and KT!)
Tim Gunn and I are both firm believers in the idea of "Just because it comes in your size doesn't mean you should wear it." I realize I'm not 115 lbs and a size 2. I'm frankly thrilled of that fact, but whatever. I know my limitations when it comes to wearing some things and work around it. For one, I don't look good in white and ivory, so you'll not see me wear it. I look like crap in shorts and short skirts so I don't wear them. I, along with 99% of the population, shouldn't wear low-rise anything, so I don't.
However, some jackass thought it'd be a great idea to make low-rise TIGHTS and I bought them on accident. It never occurred to me to look for that on the package. I saw my size (*cringe*), my color, and ran to the register. Who knew they'd make tights that dissect you in places you didn't even know could be cut into. I pulled and I tugged and I kicked and I stretched and I kicked (you know you love Sally O'Malley!) and I couldn't get the blasted things up over my butt! I finally threw some Spanx over 'em because I was going to be late for work. I made a Walmart run as soon as everyone got to work and swapped those babies for some REAL tights. Tights that come up to my waist like proper tights should. What boggles my mind is this: If it's cold enough outside for tights, would you NEED low-rise pants? Isn't a bare middrift a seasonal thing anyway?
Cute, huh? I love a good deal and I especially love a deal when I don't even have to pay for it! :)

It's almost basketball season....
Zebra Print Scarf: bought from a boutique in town
White Long Sleeve Tee: Old Navy
Black Short-Sleeve Cardigan: The Limited
Red Pants: The Limited
Black Pumps: BCBGirls
I can't talk about football season but I'm very excited about the approaching basketball season! Decided it was time to start trying out some red and black looks so I'm ready to go for games. I many times go straight to games from work which means a look like this is common for me to wear to basketball games.
On November 8, UofL plays at NKU in their new arena for an exhibition game. Jamie and I are NKU alums-- but I have also been a huge UofL fan since practically birth and am an alum of that university as well! I'm trying to figure out a way to wear black, red and yellow all 3 together so I'm equally supporting both schools. I haven't figured it out yet. If I dont figure out something soon, I'll just have to be in black as the neutral color! Jamie and I are going to the game along with my father and grandmother--and we have courtside seats so finding a good outfit is imperative!! We'll be sure to take pictures of the final verdict. (J will be in black and gold only-- no red for her--she cheers for that blue team down the road-- a true test of our friendship :-) )

Monday -- Ally
I hope you all had a great weekend! The weather here has cooled off and I'm loving it!
Teal corduroy blazer: Weird TJ Maxx brand. Had it for years.
Orange shirt: JCP
Black pants: Old Navy
Shoes: Target
Brooch: vintage
Necklace: gift
I'm super annoyed at how the waist of this jacket just goes right up under my boobs. What the hell? I know my waist starts about there anyway, but seriously. I'm not THAT short-waisted...or am I??
Are those neck wrinkles?? JEEZE!!!!
The last time I wore this jacket the button was kind enough to pop off and hide...for good. I forget to buy a button for it every time I'm out, so I grabbed this brooch/pin this morning. I think it's kinda cute and did the job.
These are from the Target haul a few months back. I wish they were lined better. They're lined in that cheap plastic and they make my feet sweat something awful. I know you wanted to know that, but whatever. Cheap shoes = stinky feet.
Ode to CAbi
Little Black Jacket: CAbi Fall 08
Premiere Blouse: CAbi Fall 08
Charcoal Cigarette Pants: CAbi Fall 08
Platform Pumps: Type A
I really try to not wear the same brand of clothing head to toe. It just seems so cliche to me but sometimes it just happens without you realizing it. Today was one of those days. I walked out the door, looked down and realized I was in the new fall CAbi collection head to toe. I guess that's what I like about it -- it mixes and matches pretty effortlessly because I didn't buy any of these items imagining them together!
It's funny how much a tie can completely change the look of a shirt. I thought it was pretty "conservative business woman" last week with the black trousers, tucked in and tied in a bow. I think the look is much edgier untucked with the loop to the side and skinny pants. A look for every occasion.

Workin the Weekend -- Ally
Happy weekend!! It rained all day yesterday (yuck) but today the sun's out! It's still below 50 degrees, though, so I'm a happy camper!
Corduroy blazer: Bass
Teal shell: Target
Jeans: Walmart (these are a hundred years old and I found them in my guest room closet. Score!)
Shoes: Steve Madden
Necklace: shop in NOLA
When I was little I HATED corduroy, but over the past few years I've grown fond of it. Cord pants aren't for me, but I like it in a jacket and as a trim. I think Mama still wants to choke me every time I wear it though...did I mention I HATED it when I was little? haha
I know we've all seen this necklace, but I'm putting this pic up b/c it's a more accurate representation of the color of the jacket. It looks sorta orange in the top pic, but it's a pinkish maroon. I have a hard time matching stuff with it - any suggestions? I tried orange w/ it the other day and it was awful. I don't want to just wear this top and black under it all season.
I've had these shoes for a hundred years too. I probably got them at the Zappos outlet for under $30 if I had to guess. Most of my non-Target shoes come from there or when Dillard's has their crazy clearance sales.
***Edit***
Mama - Is this the pic you're talking about?
I remember getting cord pants and shirts for a gift and promptly throwing them to the ground and stomping on them. Before I could finish expressing how much I hated those pants, you were already smacking the crap out of me. Granted, I deserved it, but who the hell gets a kid corduroy pants as a gift?!?!

Cheap Cashmere
Stylelist reported earlier this week that cashmere is no longer in demand--a sign of the troubled economy no doubt.
I love cashmere. The way I see it, if you're going to have to trapse through the snow and frigid cold to work in the winter, you may as well have the warmest, softest sweater on. I've built up a decent collection over the years--after all if you care for it well and use a sweater comb to keep it looking fresh, cashmere can last forever.
However, the economy is getting in the way of cashmere love. Which is why I feel the need to let you all know that this week when I was at Kohl's they had cashmere on sale!!!! There were solid color cardigans and some argyle as well. I think they were all around $60 each-- a bargain for cashmere. I have a couple Kohl's cashmere sweaters from a few years ago and honestly, as I like them just as well as some of the cashmere I have at twice that price.
Get thee to Kohl's for warm, snuggly cashmere!

The weather changed the look....
Wrap Dress: CAbi
Belt: Limited
Boots: Random Rack Room Shoes brand
Necklace: Gift from Jamie
Red Cord Bomber Jacket: Mossimo
Got dressed this morning, took my picture and realized how cold it was so threw on my favorite fall jacket (get ready - I wear it a lot with different items! I've had it a couple years now and still have not tired of it). I was so cold I actually ended up keeping the jacket on all day so I decided I needed another picture of what ended up being the actual outfit so I took one with the jacket when I got home from work. (I must say the hair and makeup held up well this particular day-- these pictures were 11 hours apart--I also look far more awake at the end of the day than I do at the beginning!!)
--And I guess if you didn't already know, like Ally I many times post a day late...Hopefully this isn't a huge breach of blogger trust or anything....

Thursday -- Ally
I look awfully drab today, but I assure you, I wasn't so mournful in person! :)
Drapey cardi: NY&Co.
Sheer black blouse: Target
Pink satin shell: NY&Co.
Pants: Old Navy
Shoes: Target
Belt: NY&Co.
Kimberly has this belt and wears it so well. I've had it for months but just keep forgetting to throw it on!
Up close of the blouse. This top is way too big for me, but it goes nicely as a middle layer. It has a tie in the back and pin tucking at the top.
Not sure why my hair is photographing so weirdly. The color has been off in my photos since I got back from vacation. I need to make sure my camera settings are right!

On the search for a new red belt
Blazer: CAbi
Chino Skirt: J Crew
Black Lace Cami: Old Navy
Red Patent Belt: The Limited
Burgundy necklace: Gift from Jamie
Tall Black Boots: Some random Rack Room Shoes brand
This look is really a more "fall" version of my Corporate Casual look several weeks ago.
I love this red patent belt-- it's the perfect width and color. However, after about 3 years of much love, it's coming apart. I have already super glued back together once but it's falling apart again and looking pretty run down. Has anyone else seen anyone selling a plain, red patent belt about 2 inches wide? Help me replenish my wardrobe!

How much is too much?
Red Cardigan: The Limited
Zebra Scarf: ? Not sure of brand, bought at small boutique in town
Studded Belt: Target
Charcoal Cigarette Pants: CAbi
Pumps: BGBGirls
It's starting to feel brisk outside in the mornings. I don't mind because I do love wearing scarves and making them part of the outfit as opposed to part of the commute. Plus I usually actually stay warm in the office that way!
However, there have been mixed opinions thus far that the studded belt AND the zebra scarf together are too much. What do you think? Do you like the studded belt or should I have worn a solid black belt?

Back to work Tuesday -- Ally
Well, we're back. Exhausted, yet still on speaking terms - that's always good! I think we both need a vacation from our vacation...3, 000 miles in 8 days is a lot! I'll post a recap of my vacation outfits this week :)
Thin, grey, tshirt: Old Navy
Purple lace cami: Old Navy
Pants: Old Navy
Shoes: wait for it... OLD NAVY.
Necklace: Vintage MeMaw
I didn't realize I was all Old Navy until just now...if I weren't so comfortable I'd be annoyed with it.
I've worn this necklace before but always forget to put on the earrings. I'm not much of an earrings gal, but they'd be cute shoe clips.
And just for KT, my shoes on my desk!
I got the shoes and pants during Old Navy's $14.92 Columbus Day sale. If it weren't such a great deal, I'd have passed on it just out of principle. I mean, seriously, what the hell did Columbus discover? Absolutely nothing. You can't discover someplace where people already live...never made sense to me. Silly history books.
And since it's a week of birthdays, Happy Birthday to my sweet Maddy. She's 8 today (!!!!) and she's sweeter and cuter than ever.
December 2000, right after we adopted each other:
Maddy was a chunk when I got her. 10 lbs at 6 weeks!
Summer 2008:
My baby's all grown up :(
***EDIT***
Maddy and the first time she met her Aunt Leslie.
Leslie wasn't a dog person back then and she especially didn't like Maddy getting black fur all over her white pants. However, Maddy knew this and did her best to cover Les with fur every time they hung out.
They soon came to terms and I learned to keep a lint roller handy :)

Happy Birthday, Tracey
Tracey's been super busy with work and school the past few months so she's not been able to post a lot. However, she's looked fab every time I've seen her!

Classic start to the week
White Oxford: Banana Republic
Tweed Pencil Skirt: CAbi
Chunky Red Necklace: Just Jewelry
Red Patent Pumps: Pleaser
Went for a classic look today with the tweed, red, black and white.
Classic never really feels "exciting" but it does always feel chic and polished.

A reader winner!
I just received a note on facebook that one of our readers, Keisha from Houston (that I happened to go to high school with) was one of the winners on HandbagPlanet.com's giveaway earlier this week!! Keisha won the adorable fuschia bag with the bow. Keisha, take a picture of yourself with your new bag when you receive and we'll post it!
But another funny HandbagPlanet story....my younger sister decided to enter and at the end you probably saw where you could enter your email and send the invite to people in your address book. Well, Ashley didn't uncheck everyone....so the next thing she knows, it says she sent 82 invites...which meant she had sent to co-workers, bosses, former professors, etc. So Ash had to send an email (particularly to her professors!!) saying "Please disregard the email from me regarding HandbagPlanet." Hahahaha! However, one of the women wrote back and said "Well thanks for letting me know it was an accident...but I've already entered for one as well!!!" I've about done that so many times. So embarrassing. And she didn't even win a bag for her embarrassment! Thanks for the laugh, Ash.

Flapper Fun!!
White Oxford: Old Navy
Flapper Dress: CAbi
Houndstooth Heels: Chinese Laundry
Sometimes a picture doesn't do a garment justice. This dress is one of those times.
You can't see because it's black but the dress is darling- it's empire waist and is a "flapper"- it literally has car wash type flaps that are loose coming down from the empire waist, with a black sheath underneath the flaps. I tried to take some "action shots", twirling so you could see the flaps swirling around but I was told I basically looked like a moron in the best of the shots so you get no action shot. You'll have to use your imagination. But it is great fun to wear because the flaps swirl out around you as you walk. It's definitely different and a statement piece that stands out in the crowd-- I received a ton of comments on it today.
It may be my favorite purchase of the CAbi fall season (excluding the black wrap tee that makes me want to email Carol Anderson and beg for more color options) because it can be dressed for work like this but can also be worn as a cocktail dress for dressier type events. It was also suggested that it could be cute with some magenta tights. What do you think? I'm also thinking I can wear with my fuschia tie neck top sans tie underneath or with a great blazer over top and belted....I'm also thinking a skinny belt could be worn at the empire waist line to give some additional color and definition....lots of possibilities....I can't wait to try them all!!

A bold blouse -- Leslie
Tie neck blouse: CAbi
Black cami: The Limited
Black pants: Harold's
Black pumps: BCBG Girls
I was told this shirt looks neon in the photo. Trust me, it's not in person- it's a bold fuschia but most definitely not neon. And Ive had these pants for a couple years but they didn't fit last season. And I tried them on the other night and they fit perfect! How exciting is it when that happens?!?!?!
The tie on this blouse is totally removable which means I can't wait to play around with it and wear it different ways both with this shirt and with totally different garments. I did a euro loop with it as well and it looked adorable looped to the side. It's like a shirt and an accessory - for the price of one!

Chance at Free Stuff
I'm a bit of a purse whore. Ok so I'm typically too lazy to change them often, but I love to see the options and selection hanging in my closet! You can imagine my dismay when I grabbed my black bag the other day (I HAD to change bags--red and fuschia do NOT mix) and saw how run down my black bag was.
However, I saw Kimberly's post today about the new handbagplanet.com retailer and the 24-hour bag giveaway. I decided it was worth a chance to register and see if I could win myself a new black one! And if I don't, we'll I've already done some scouting and am ready to shop.
Feel free to play the game and register for any other bag except the one I picked--we don't want you lowering my odds of winning! Click here to enter--and let us know if you are a winner!

Jeans Day- and a rant
Dot Cardigan: The Limited
Black Cami: Old Navy
Red Patent Belt: The Limited
Trouser Jeans: Gap
Black Peep Toe Pumps: Steve Madden
I love jeans days at work. I think we should have them every day. I am always so happy and comfortable that I really am quite productive! That also probably has something to do with the fact that I can't wear jeans if I have meetings so jeans days usually end up totally 100% at my desk and not interrupted 20,000 times which also leads to an increase in productivity. Being the obsessive list maker that I am, nothing makes me happier than to complete projects and mark items off the to-do list!
Speaking of jeans days, I feel like I should say something about appropriate jeans wear at work. Here's a hint to some people- it's not with a t-shirt and sneakers. As a young professional who has entered her career in the time of "business casual," I have no problem with wearing jeans to work on a casual day -- but if you are in an office environment, I think you should always have on heels or nice flats or loafers and a nice jacket, button down or cardigan. Wearing jeans does not give you an excuse to be sloppy. You must still look work appropriate and tailored.
Clothes don't earn you a job or reflect your ability- but appropriate dress does earn you respect and a good first impression. Tshirts and sneakers do not give a positive one.
Whew. I feel better.

And so it begins...
Black Tee: Banana Republic
Bronze Jacket: CAbi
Charcoal Cigarette Pants: CAbi
Scarf: Mark
Peep Toe Pumps: Steve Madden
And so it begins again...another work week. However this is a 4 day week for me so I am VERY happy about that!
Last time I wore this coat, I commented that I wished I had it on with straighter leg pants. I took my thoughts to heart this morning and paired the wide, flouncy jacket with my skinny pants. I much prefer the look.
The scarf was a last minute addition bolt of color--and what garnered the most compliments! Isn't that how it always is- the piece you put in the least amount of thought on is the biggest hit!

Getting to know the COTC gals
We were recently tagged by Elisabeth at Living the Fabulous Life to share eleven things about ourselves. We thought you may find this to be a good way to get to know each of us more- heck, we learned something new about each other as well. Below are eleven of our different "favorites"
Ally
Clothes shop - Target, NY&Co, Old Navy
Furniture shop - IKEA is awesome. I could live there if they'd let me.
Sweet - I like sweet-salty combos. I love Culver's Chocolate custard in a waffle cone though.
City - Louisville has my heart.
Drink - water and coffee
Music - I listen to just about everything. I like 91.9 WFPK (local radio) the best
TV- Like Jamie, my ti-faux is almost full! Lost, Samantha Who?, Boston Legal (I LOVE JAMES SPADER), Gossip Girl, 90210, Project Runway, America's Next Top Model, Rachel Zoe Project (I used to dislike her but I've learned it was for no good reason. Love her now. SHUT IT DOWN), Graham Norton Show (ti-faux it. It's on BBC and he's fabulous), Kentucky Life (I love KET too), and a hundred other shows. I watch a LOT of TV and I'm pretty sure Al hates me for all the crap I make him watch.
Film - Breakfast at Tiffany's, Caddyshack, Fletch, Fight Club, Kill Bill
Workout - hahahahahahahahahaha That's cute.
Pastries - Yes, please!
Coffee - Loooove coffee. I take mine with cream, no sugar. I love all things espresso, but would rather more coffee than milk in my drinks. I don't like sweet coffee drinks either. Blech!
Jamie
Clothes shop: Target and the Limited…Two words, RETAIL THERAPY! These stores always stroke my ego and make me feel special!
Furniture shop: IKEA…I cannot get enough of this store! You can find really hip and unique items without breaking your wallet.
Sweet: Dark Chocolate…I could swim in a sea of dark chocolate. One of my favorite things to bake with.
City: San Diego, CA…What a beautiful town, those who have been there know exactly what I am talking about!
Drink: Coffee and water…Coffee is what keeps me ticking and water is what keeps me alive! Ha!
Music: Big music fan! I love anything across the board!
TV: Let’s put it this way, it is only halfway thru the week and my TIVO is almost full. Top 5 right now have to be Private Practice, Dirty Sexy Money, How I Met Your Mother, Fringe, and The Office.
Film: An Affair to Remember is my favorite movie of all time. Big Carey Grant fan.
Workout: Spinning, Pilates and Walking
Pastries: Apple Strudel I guess, not a huge pastry gal.
Coffee: I am on this huge kick right now of Dunkin Donuts. They have this Blueberry Coffee that is so delicious! But my favorite coffee is from a small coffee shop in Park Hills, KY called Reality Tuesdays. I would go to there everyday before work for like 5 years. I miss it!
Leslie
Clothes shop: The Limited and CAbi (not a shop but you know...)Furniture shop: ??? I don't really buy furniture. Z Gallerie maybe?
Sweet: Graeter's Ice Cream
City: Hmmm....this is difficult- I've been to a ton of great American cities- LA, New York, Boston, Dallas, Miami, Savannah...but I still have to place London at the top of the list.
Drink: Im currently addicted to Fresca--but Diet Coke is the long standing addiction.
Music: Anything top 40ish
TV: Seriously? One show? Sorry no can do. Brothers & Sisters, Grey's Anatomy, Lipstick Jungle, Dirty Sexy Money Greek and Gossip Girl are the top 6
Film: All time favorite is Dead Poets Society; recent fave was 27 Dresses and the Devil Wears Prada (I'll have to tell the story sometime of going to see TDWP in the theatre on vacation with my entire family...)
Workout: Pilates or walking on nice days
Pastries: Cinnamon rolls
Coffee: Don't like coffee. Diet Coke provides my caffeine shot when needed
Tracey
Furniture Shop: Value City-- Good sturdy, fashionable furniture for half the price of other stores.
Sweet: Dark chocolate
City: Chicago
Drink: Diet Sunkist. It's my crack.

I like blues, old motown and big band... Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr and Michael Buble are faves too.

TGIF - Ally
It's super cloudy on our balcony for some reason, so excuse the dullness of this photo. I'm off work today because Al and I are leaving for vacation tomorrow! We're taking an eight-day, 15-state road trip through New England and a teeny bit of Canada. I'm super duper excited and am ready to see new places. The fall foliage will be in full swing and since this is my favorite season, I'll be in heaven!
I'm out running errands today and enjoying the beautiful weather.
Cardi: NY&Co
Tank under cardi: NY&Co.
Jeans: Gap
Flats: Sam Edelman
Scarf: ebay
How pretty is my basil??? I hope it doesn't die while we're gone. I have some friends/co-workers coming by while we're gone to keep things watered, but I'm still nervous. I just want it to make it until we get back so I can freeze it. I still might cut it back tonight b/c I'd hate to lose it all :(
We should have internet while we're gone, so I'll be putting up pics on Flickr and doing outfits here as I have time. If anyone has any suggestions for things to see and do while up that way, send an email to me at the address on the right - I'd love to hear what are must sees and dos and buys!
My favorite fall pants
Orange Chinos: J Crew
White Button Down: The Limited
Scarf As Belt: NY and Company
Pumps: Rampage
We all have those items in our closet that are simply all time favorites. The ones that luckily seem to always fit no matter what your weight fluctuation and never seem to go out of style.
These orange chinos are one of mine. They were discovered 5 years ago (I think--it's been a while I know!) while at the J Crew outlet in Hilton Head. I love them so much that if I could find another pair that fit like these, I would buy in some other fun colors and just plain khaki as well. But I can't find this fit anymore. It says it's the "Favorite Fit" but I've tried those on and they just don't fit the same. Or maybe these have just formed to me over the years. Who knows.
They are just so truly fall--the orange is bold and I personally believe, as a result, pretty seasonal (it's too bad I'm not a UT fan!). Since I only have a few months of quality time with them, I wear them to work and out on the weekends both. The above is more of a "work" option (still for a pretty casual day) while on the weekends I wear with a white long sleeve tee, wedge loafers and a brown and white striped belt most commonly.
Do you have favorite "seasonal" garments that stand the test of time?

Thursday -- Ally
Yesterday, Leslie asked in the comments if I had my hair colored when it was cut because it looked so dark. I didn't have it colored, but it did look awfully dark for some weird reason. I took today's picture in as much sunlight as I could find. It made for silly shadows and washing out, but the hair color is accurate! :)
Top: Old Navy
Pants: Old Navy
Scarf: vintage silk Vera (ebay)
Shoes: Cole Haan
I have a blogging confession...I don't always post the pics on the same day I wear the outfit. I'm not awesome like Kimberly and E and keep up with these things. "Yesterday's" outfit? I wore that Saturday to work...eep! I feel I need to stay this only because I'm wearing the same pants/shoes I wore "yesterday" when really, they've been washed since! For the most part, I either post outfits the same day or the next - it's usually not as much of a stretch as yesterday was. However, I've been really slammed at work and have been too exhausted to post when I get home. *whew* I feel better after coming clean!!
I overslept and ran out the door this morning (thrilled my hair took zero time!) and forgot a necklace. Fortunately, I had grabbed this scarf because I was going to tie it on my bag.
I tried tying it several ways but it's not a big scarf, so I just made it a triangle then folded that up some more, tied three knots and then tied it in the back and wore it as a necklace. I think it worked :)
An Outfit Optical Illusion
White Lace Cami (best camis ever!): Old Navy
Red Cable Knit Sweater: NY and Co
Scarf: Mossimo
Charcoal Pencil Skirt: Express
Wide Patent Stretch Belt: The Limited
Giraffe Print Pumps: Nine West
Spent far too long this morning debating whether to wear this outfit with or without the belt. So I did what I normally do when I'm in doubt- I wear it to work and then make the ladies in the office decide which way it looks best. I tell them helping me get dressed every day has to be the best part of the job :-)
I feel like some outfits are optical illusions. They look great from the front. But not so good from the side. Although my co-workers swore that I was wrong, I felt that way wearing this outfit. I was feeling pretty cute and confident and then as I was walking down the street, I did a quick side reflection check in the windows of a building (What? Like you don't do the same thing...) and realized it wasn't nearly as cute/flattering from the side. So I decided I would walk sideways and only face forward to people the rest of the day. I'm all about rational, realistic solutions to fashion issues that arise.

Wednesday -- Ally
Happy Hump Day! We've had some beautiful, cool fall weather and I couldn't be more excited. The mornings are much cooler than the afternoons (25+ degree difference most days) so it's been a guessing game on how to dress. However, I have strong opinions about "seasonal" dressing and will rant about that another day (in short: We work and live in temperature controlled environments...why all the bundling in the office? Why?).
Shirt: JCP
Pants: Old Navy
Scarf as belt: vintage Echo (via ebay)
Shoes: Cole Haan
You might notice something a little different...I had my hair cut! I average about 4 haircuts every 3 years so this is a big deal. The last one was in early January 2008 and I made it until October before I got the itch to change it. For what it's worth, I don't heat style or do anything to my hair so my ends don't get icky and ratty. The girl who did my hair was shocked to learn it'd been nearly a year and said she couldn't tell - so there! :)
However, I still needed a cut and wanted some sort of style. Tracey's hair is the cutest (you'd see it if she ever posted...hint hint!) so I went to her gal at Z Salon. We talked about my current 'do (or lack of) and how much effort I'm willing to put in for styling (5 min tops) and all my crazy requirements (must go in pony tail, no weird layers by my face, no short bangs, must look good on days I wash 'n dash). Fortunately, she didn't kick me out of her chair and went to work. She gave me a cut that's cute but takes all of 5 minutes in the morning. Thanks, Trae, for guilting me into getting my hair did. :)
See...it's not THAT drastic to most (Hell, Al didn't even notice I had it cut. No words, ladies. No words.) but to me it is. She gave me some swoopy bangs on both sides of my part and a shorter layer about mid-way through.
Tameka (the hair goddess) said my hair would look longer and she's right! I've had several folks say how much longer it looks and how they didn't know it was this long before. Tameka cut about an inch off the bottom too and put layers in it as well. She did magic I say.
Oh and honey, even the stinky UPS guy noticed my new 'do. Just sayin'. I know you said my hair looked cute (and it did), but when you buzz off all your hair w/clippers I notice that. Same difference, right? :)
As an aside I wanted to post a pic from the weekend. Al and I met up with some friends for the Trolley Hop and before I could bitch about how hot it was in the gallery (OMG HOT), a friend pointed out our Congressman, John Yarmuth, standing behind us. He's running for re-election and evidently we walked into the gallery who was hosting him for the evening.
Anyway, we met with him and shook hands and chatted for a bit and then all were major nerds and had our pics taken with him. Regardless of where you lie politically, it's always cool to meet someone who's in DC and representing you and this was no different. He was very friendly and said he's having the time of his life up there.
What to do, what to do?
Pencil Skirt, Turtleneck Sweater and Rodeo Belt: CAbi
Leopard Print Pumps: Nine West
What do you wear when it's October and 85 degrees outside? I want to feel seasonably appropriate but it's sure hard when it's that warm. At least it wasn't humid. And a shortsleeve turtleneck sweater seemed perfect!
I have this exact skirt in black and white tweed too...and I've been debating whether I need to shorten it about an inch. It currently ends at the bottom of my kneecap. I wear the skirts frequently with tall boots in the winter and I read this weekend that when wearing tall boots with a pencil skirt, you should show a bit of a break between the skirt and boot for the maximum slimming effect. However, they also say the slimmest part of your leg is at the bottom of your kneecap so it's good to have skirts end there. So what are your thoughts??? (And no, buying new boots is not an option!) Hem or no hem?
