New Beginnings... and a giveaway too!

Today is my last day at a job that I've been at for 11 years. While I've grown very tired of the stress and frustrations of the job, I've come to love a lot of the people I work with, so it's very bittersweet for me. I'm sure there will be plenty of tears when I finally walk out the door. Not only am I leaving a job, I'm leaving an industry that I've been in in one capacity or another for pretty much my whole working adult life. It's very exciting, but also a little scary!

In honor of my new beginnings and fresh start, I'm vowing to get things organized and get a fresh start in my personal life as well. Part of that is cleaning out the things that I don't use or need anymore. Ladies, my loss is your gain! I have a few gently used and new items that are up for grabs. So here is the dealeo... I'm looking for ideas for my "1st Day Outfit". My new career is in a very creative field, and I will have a front office position, so I need some ideas on fun creative outfits that still look professional and give a good 1st impression. Post your ideas in the comment section and on Monday June 15th I'll choose a winner!

Like Ally's giveaway from before, if you post this on your blog with a link back to this post, you'll get another entry. Be sure to email us with your link so we can be sure to count you!

2 Forever21 necklaces
1 Old Navy necklace
set of 3 sparkly bracelets
1 Gap faux patent leather red clutch (never even carried!)

I think the specifics of your new job can help really determine the perfect outfit to wear. At the same time though, it's your first day and you need your outfit to speak to all of your new co-workers! I think, on the first day, it is best to start with basics. A white shirt and black pants for instance. I almost always bring a cardigan along just because you arn't yet comfortable with the climate of your new place. Since you have a creative job, this is a perfect chance to bring out your statement jewlery! Imagine how classy you'll look in basic pieces with a necklace that screams I'm fun, I'm funky and I'm creative too! I like the idea of the basic pieces because they tell the world that you have an understanding of the simple things. Your resume will be backed up by what your outfit says. Computer skills, conversational abilities and creativity are all being spoken by simple basic pieces. Let your jewlery do the talking on that first day.( Kind of like the personal pieces in your resume) Plus, some well placed pieces may even start a conversation! The shoes I will leave entirely up to you. If you want your shoes to also announce your creative arrival, go with some bright colors or fun patterns. If you want to let your shoes add to your ' resume outfit' go with something basic and really let your jewlery do your talking.

Just my ideas of course :) I must admit, I've been at my job for a while now but I still occassionally wear my resume outfits, just to re-iterate the point. I am skilled, attentive and funky too!!

Good Luck!

Congrats on your new job!

Front office work is very tricky – you definitely have to look very polished and since it’s in a creative setting; prints, edgy jewelry, and expressive shoes might add the spunk you’re looking for to properly interpret what the company represents.

Offices are generally cool in temperature, so I gather you will definitely need something like a cardigan or a blazer to accompany your outfit. I think that, instead of doing the cardi though; a fitted blazer in a cotton sateen with scrunched up sleeves, collar up, hair done in a loose pony tail – nice button down shirt and bold jewelry would look rather nice on you. If you decided to do something like this; straight leg pants paired with pointy [but not too high] colorful heels - would also be very suitable for a position that requires some double duty for you to blend in seamlessly with your co-workers as well as to set the tone of what the company represents for anyone walking through the door.

A printed long sleeve wrap dress with a cami underneath would also be a great idea. You could pair that with nude heels and possibly use more subdued jewelry since the dress would be the main focal point.

I really like the blouse you are wearing above too – why not use that blouse with a belt to accentuate your waist and again; either do a straight leg/wide leg pant with colored high heeled shoe or a black pencil skirt and nude heels?

I work in a really creative setting and more often than not; I am constantly inspired by how my co –workers interpret who they are via their clothes. I’m sure the same thing is going to happen to you and you will begin to just have loads of ideas on what to wear next. In reality, it already looks like you have this style thing down packed! Whatever you choose to do, just be your own fabulous self.

I would do bold colors with little unique jewerly. Or I'd wear more mutes colors with big bold jewerly that makes a statement. I'd also try new hair styles that are fresh and new. But most importantly wear a smile and a positive attitude and you'll be fine.

I wish you were giving away that top! ;-)

When starting any new job, it's a great idea to check out how the others dress, to make sure you're in line. THEN you can run with it! But in a creative field and in visible work space, classy and polished would be it for me.

Lately I've been wearing a lot of pencil skirts with cute camis and blazers or other cute jackets, and lots of bling! I love jewelry...

Congrats on the new job!!!

I recently struggled with this as well moving from an outside sales position into an office position in Philly. In the beginning, I focused on the basics - solid colors and classic styles. I did a lot of button down shirts and solid pants until I was more familiar with the company dress policies and what everyone else was wearing around the office. My one exception was bold jewelry, shoes, and bags. I have now been there 2 months and am bringing more of the funky tops and pencil skirts.

Additionally, I layer a lot! our building is humid some days and freezing on others. The best way I have gotten around this to layer with pieces that look great together or stand alone. I also usually bring a cardigan so that in the morning I am not cold but by the time it heats up in the afternoon, it is easily removable.

Finally, we have a pretty casual working environment and many folks wear jeans. I try to always dress one notch up and my boss (our CEO) has noticed that. It makes a great impression that you mean business and that you are dressing for the next step. If I do where jeans, they are always nicely pressed with a dressier top and heals -- and of course, some great jewelry.

Best of luck on your new position!!!

Congrats on the new job! Everyone has such good suggestions already...the first thing I thought of (before reading anyone's comments) was black pants and a white shirt - with simple, classic jewelry and really fun colorful shoes. I love how black and white looks so crisp and professional...and the shoes add a bit of creativity and fun.

Thanks for doing the giveaway! And good luck with the new job!
